Twitter as a reporting tool

Jacaranda News Team,Pauli van Wyk and Taurai Maduna reported live from the Lonmin Mines in Rustenburg.

How twitter is used as a journalism tool for reporting.

The above mentioned journalists give ful coverage of what the miners are doing and of what occurs at the scene. Tandai Maduna, tweets on the emotions experienced by the miners,in one of his tweets he mentions how the miners walk past the dead bodies. Pictures were also included of the police men opening fire on the miners after they failed to disperse. The police men confirmed the death odf some of the miners later on.

The live reporting seemed to have been a traumatic one because of all the action seen by the media practitioners. Weapons carried by the miners were displayed in the pictures which raises thoughts of whether or not the miners wanted to attack the police men.

Picture of Julius Malema and his discussions with the police were made available on twitter to inform citizens of the latest developments. Videos of the discussions that occured were also uploaded onto twitter, this form of information increases the need for immediacy as Media Houses compete. Smartphones are able to help in the field of ensuring that twitter is immediately used at the scene as a journalistic tool for reporting.

Jacaranda News Team used the same tactics as Tandai to inform the public about what occurs at the Marikana Massacre as it is now called.Pauli gives us a preview of what the miners look forward to seeing occur. She spoke of how they were preparing for the confrontation with their employers. The miners were prepared to have their need for higher wages met.

Journalists ensured that twitter is their main reporting tool because the information is posted immediately and feedback from ordinary citizens instantly. Twitter is a reporting tool that has moved away from the norm of having your editor proof read or approve what you publish i a newspaper, twitter is one's personal; account but some media houses use twitter as their platform to present news to the citizens immediately.

Accuracy and objectivity are still important in the journalism field because they show that journalists' ethics are kept at bay: pictures showing the dead bodies of the miners might have come as a shock to some, especially if the family members have not found out that their beloved has died.

In South African media the show of gruesome pictures such as that does not have much preference amongst the citizens. So it is up to the reporter to decide whether or not it is right to post the pictures as Tandai has. Tandai saw it fit to publish the pictures with police brutality in mind and not how families will percieve the happenings that affect families of the miners.
